ST. PAUL (Jan. 9, 2013) — Construction projects in St. Paul involving Cayuga and Lafayette will be ongoing for the next three years. Disruptions in normal vehicle traffic will begin in February.
The Cayuga Bridge project will be located on Interstate-35E between University Avenue and Maryland Avenue in Saint Paul. It includes replacement of the Cayuga Street bridge, Pennsylvania Avenue bridge and railroad bridges along I-35E.
The existing Pennsylvania Avenue/I-35E interchange will be replaced by a new interchange at Cayuga Street, which will help correct existing safety and operational issues and provide better freeway access for Saint Paul’s Phalen Boulevard corridor, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation(MNDOT).
I-35E will be reconstructed along a new alignment between Maryland Avenue and University Avenue. The new roadway also will have an auxiliary lane added in each direction for additional capacity, along with improved roadway layout. This project is in development. It is scheduled to begin in 2013 and last through 2015.
The Lafayette Bridge Project with MNDOT, meanwhile, will build a crossover from the existing Lafayette Bridge to the new northbound bridge. Sometime in February vehicle combinations of more than 35 feet in length will be prohibited from using the Lafayette Bridge until the crossover is removed in early 2014.
Two lanes of traffic will remain open in both directions for vehicles. Emergency vehicles will be permitted to use the bridge, as well as school buses. The northbound Highway 52 loop-ramp to westbound Interstate 94 in Saint Paul will remain open. But northbound Highway 52 will be inaccessible from Plato Boulevard. Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour.
Streets permanently closed during this project:
• Eastbound East Seventh Street ramp to westbound I-94.
• Fifth Street east of Johns Street.
• Fourth Street will be closed to vehicles. Bicyclists have access to Bruce Vento trail by way of Fourth Street.
• Kittson Street north of Seventh Street no longer exists. It will be the new northbound Highway 52 to the Seventh Street exit.
• Kittson Street south of the Downtowner and Holiday Station no longer exists.
