Hmong pro-wrestling night

St. Paul, MN — Get Ready to Rummmmmbbbbbbllllllleeee. Hmong College Prep Academy will be hosting an evening of pro wrestling and family entertainment on Saturday, May 12th.  The action will take place in the school’s gym and also feature live music and break dancing exhibitions.

HCPA Social Studies teacher Morgan McLaughlin is very excited about pro wrestling coming to HCPA.  “It’s going to be a great night of entertainment,” stated Mr. McLaughlin.  “We’re partnering with the American Wrestling Federation, a St. Paul-based group that is regularly seen on KSTC Channel 45 and puts on shows throughout the Midwest.  It should be a lot of fun.”

The event is being held as a fundraiser for a new HCPA study abroad program and the school’s Junior Committee. A silent auction featuring St. Paul Saints and Minnesota Lynx merchandise, autographed books and a number of area merchant gift certificates will take place. There will also be live music from HCPA junior Jasmine Xiong and a break dance exhibition from the school’s own Supermen Hip-Hop Dancers. Proceeds from the festivities will be used towards their senior class trip.

MINNEAPOLIS (April 28, 2012) — A great value for the dollar was to be with a record-setting 20 bouts with Minnesota’s best MMA amateur and professional fighters give Japan their best in Extreme 33, a cage fighting night at the Target Center.

With 3,417 in attendance there was plenty to watch as regular fighters on the local fight scene mixed it up with new faces in both the amateur and professional ranks. In the end Japan came out ahead in international matches 2 to 1.

HARTFORD, CT. (March 10, 2012) — Three-time U.S. Olympic women’s hockey medalist and all-time NCAA women’s leading scorer Julie Chu, is now enshrined in the Connecticut Hall of Fame.

The honor came last Saturday with six other male players during a Hartford Whalers hockey game at the Sports & Entertainment complex, which houses the Hall of Fame. Chu is the first female to receive the honor with six men who played or worked in professional hockey.

Dodgers host tsunami victims for stadium tour

LOS ANGELES (March 15, 2012) — The non-profit group Ashinaga brought a group of student runners from the Tohoku region of Japan to Los Angeles to run the L.A. Marathon, including two children that were orphaned by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan a year ago.

The group was treated to a tour of Dodger Stadium Thursday, complete with lunch courtesy of the Dodgers before running the L.A. Marathon this weekend to raise funds to build an orphanage in Japan.

Among the many elite MMA fighters from across the globe at CFX Cage Fighting Xtreme 33 scheduled for 6 p.m. at Target Center on Saturday, April 28 will be a Minnesota native who proudly served his country and is now trying to make a name for himself in the cage.

Minnetonka native Jeremy Hamilton (8-1) will fight in his first main event when he takes on former UFC and Bellator veteran Yoshiyuki Yoshida (13-6) of Japan.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 16, 2012) — The Organization of Chinese Americans, a national organization dedicated to advancing the political, social, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), strongly condemns sensational speech that capitalizes on an individual’s race.

Tweets sent out by Floyd Mayweather on February 13 and 14 have turned his casual observation into an outrageous claim that the “hype (behind the basketball player Jeremy Lin) is because he’s Asian.” The irony lost to Mr. Mayweather is that his dismissive statements perpetuate criticisms that are similar to the racial scrutiny that Jackie Robinson faced when he entered the Major Leagues.

Farview Park is located in North Minneapolis. All the players are Hmong, and most came to the United States from Thailand’s Wat Tham Krabok refugee camp in 2004 and 2005

After nearly four decades of college and professional coaching the O‘ahu native returned to his roots to coach the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa in December 2011. Most recently with the University of Utah, Chow was called in to conclude a deflating UH season.
