DOL funds to help young offenders get on right track

Sacramento Cab Driver Severely Beaten

November 29, 2010: Earlier today, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) called on local authorities and the FBI to initiate a hate crime investigation into a vicious attack on a Sikh American cab driver in Sacramento, who was allegedly called Osama bin Laden as he was attacked. Early yesterday morning, 56-year-old Harbhajan Singh, a cab driver in Sacramento, CA, was brutally assaulted after picking up passengers at a local restaurant. Singh believes, if he had not gotten away, the two men who attacked him would have killed him.

Khang Duy (Mike) Nguyen may be the first Asian American chief of police for a municipality in the State of Minnesota.

For the past six months Nguyen has served as the Chief of Police for Hector, Minnesota, a town of about 1,200 people in Renville County, about 90 miles slightly southwest of St. Paul. It is a part-time position, however, he is in charge of two fulltime officers, and seven part-time officers.

FBI asked to probe hate vandalism

(July 9, 2010) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today asked the FBI to investigate recent graffiti spray-painted on a St. Cloud business as a possible hate crime. The Hormud Market, owned by a Somali Muslim St. Cloud resident, was spray painted with the words, “Go Home” on Thursday, July 8.

St. Paul woman sentenced for smuggling wildlife parts

St. Paul, Minn. (June 23, 2010) – Last week in a federal court in St. Paul, a 57-year-old St. Paul woman was sentenced for bringing endangered-species parts into the country. United States District Court Judge Richard H. Kyle sentenced Seng Her to three years of probation and 300 hours of community service on one count of smuggling goods into the U.S. She was indicted on December 9, 2009, and pleaded guilty on February 11, 2010.
