Marriage Amendment is a sad day in Minnesota

St. Paul, Minn. (May 21, 2011) – Regarding the passage of SF 1308, a bill that would place the issue of writing into the State’s constitution that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, on the ballot for popular vote, I cannot imagine a more unfortunate day in Minnesota’s recent history, then what has transpired this evening. Passage of this bill misrepresents the warm and loving character of the Minnesota I have come to love so dearly.

APIA groups challenge ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

San Francisco (April 5, 2011) – Members of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice on Monday asked the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold a district court’s decision that struck down the DADT (Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell) policy, which discriminates against openly lesbian, gay and bisexual members of the U.S. military.

Shades Of Yellow (SOY), the first Hmong organization for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) began a new chapter last month as Oskar Ly agreed to step in as Interim Executive Director during a transition and search period for a new lead staff member. The move comes after Kevin Xiong, founding executive director of the five year old organization, decided to resign from the position as in October. Xiong is returning to his previous career in Human Resources Management with plans to finish his Masters Degree in Leadership and Management.

MINNEAPOLIS (July 9, 2010) – The first ever National Queer Southeast Asian Conference took place at the Radisson University Hotel in Minneapolis last weekend. The conference was hosted by Shades of Yellow, the Twin Cities Hmong Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) organization, and provided a space for Southeast Asians and allies from around the country to discuss issues that are important to the Queer Southeast Asian communities.
