ST. PAUL (Jan. 11, 2011) — It has been more than 10 years since the first Karens from Burma arrived in Minnesota as refugees.

The New Year celebration event for the Karen year 2751, eleventh such event in Saint Paul, was held on Dec. 31st and Jan. 1st at Washington Technology Secondary School.  To celebrate the new year, two leaders from local Karen organizations spoke about how far the Karens have come in their adopted state.

Secondhand Smoke and Diverse Populations

ECHO is reaching out to let the public know it is kicking off 2012 with a brand new program and public service announcement set, “Secondhand Smoke in Our Communities.”

ECHO is excited about this co-production with Clearway Minnesota because it tells the story of secondhand smoke’s impact to diverse populations – in some of which tobacco use is greatly outpacing that of the general population.  The 20-30 minute program informs viewers that being exposed to the smoke from other people’s cigarette smoke is very dangerous and can cause illness.

During their visit the cardinal discussed the scholarships established by Mendis and spoke about his late grandparents who built the Holy Rosary church in Polonnaruwa — the birthplace of this longtime resident of St. Paul.
