Rally for the Panchen Lama

MINNEAPOLIS (April 25, 2012) — The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress Minnesota on Wednesday held a rally to raise awareness about the fate of the Panchen Lama.

The event was held at Peavey Plaza on Nicollet Mall Downtown Minneapolis and involved Minnesota Tibetans and Tibet community supporters. April 25 marked the 23rd Birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, once considered the world’s youngest political prisoner.

“We demand that the Panchen Lama and all the other political prisoners inside Tibet be released immediately,” says Tenzing Jigme, President of the RTYC-MN chapter.

Local Tibetans mourn martyrs

MINNEAPOLIS (March 28, 2012) — The Tibetan community of Minnesota is mourning the death of 27 year-old Jamphel Yeshi who passed away Monday in New Delhi.

The Tibetan Youth Congress announced the death of Jamphel Yeshi, 27, who set his body on fire for the cause of Tibet in New Delhi. They consider Yeshi a of martyr. He is survived by his mother and four siblings, who are all in Tibet.

Tibetans mark Uprising Day

Tibetans in Minnesota join other expatriate communities around the world Saturday, in marking Tibetan National Uprising Day on March 10.

Several hundred Tibetans and their supporters in Minnesota will join a global day of protest to mark and to demand an immediate end to China’s violent crackdown in Tibet. A 10 a.m. rally will be held at the State Capitol in St. Paul and includes a march to downtown to show solidarity with Tibetans in Tibet. Event detail is as follows.

Palden Gyatso returns to Minnesota

One of the world’s longest serving political prisoners will again visit Minnesota on Sun., Aug. 21, 2011 at 4 p.m. at the Tibetan Community Hall, 1096 Raymond Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55108. The Venerable Palden Gyatso is an 80 year old Tibetan monk and former Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience. He is one of the world’s longest serving political prisoners after surviving 33 years of confinement in the Chinese gulag where he was constantly exposed to various forms of indoctrination and torture.

WASHINGTON (July 16, 2011) — President Barack Obama held a meeting with His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama last week at The White House Office, according to the Press Secretary who released an office statement. The President reiterated his strong support for the preservation of the unique religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions of Tibet and the Tibetan people throughout the world. He underscored the importance of the protection of human rights of Tibetans in China.

(April 22, 2011) – For the third time, Rinpo Lama has elected to employ the traditional Tibetan form of pilgrimage: prostration, unfamiliar to most Minnesotans but well-known to all Tibetans in the hope of awakening the people of his adopted state to the cause of Tibet and the cause of rescuing the Panchen Lama. His first two were in 2008 and 2009.
