Among the most significant fruits of the “flexible diplomacy” policy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), implemented after Ma Ying-jeou assumed the ROC presidency in 2008, is the World Health Organization’s (WHO) first-ever invitation to Taiwan to attend the 2009 World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting as an official observer. This year, Taiwan has once again received an invitation to attend the WHA meeting. These developments not only demonstrate that détente between Taiwan and mainland China is conducive to expanding Taiwan’s international space but signify a watershed in Taiwan’s progress toward rejoining the mainstream of the international community.

ST. PAUL (Feb. 7, 2010) – The North Star Ballroom of the U of MN St. Paul Student Center was filled to capacity with community looking to usher in the Year of the Tiger.

The Ha Family Entertainment Lion Dance Troupe opened the event with a towering lion that reached up over 15 feet to run the lions head through the banner hanging over the stage. The bigger than life display set the tone for a series of performances that ranged in variety and style.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will travel to Taiwan and play two games against a team from the Chinese Professional Baseball League on March 13 and 14, MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association announced January 23, 2010 in Taipei.

This will be the Dodgers second trip to Taiwan.  They became the first Major League team to play in Taiwan in 1993 when they competed against a team of CPBL All-Stars.

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 5, 2010) – Lucie Cheng, former Director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UCLA, passed away on January 27, 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan after courageously battling cancer for several years.

Don T. Nakanishi, Ph.D., Director and Professor Emeritus, UCLA Asian American Studies Center, described Professor Cheng as “a courageous and innovative scholar who placed Asian Americans at the forefront of class, gender and labor, breaking away from stereotypes that saw them as either the victims of their circumstances or the pawns of History.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 26, 2010) – Oregon Congressman David Wu (D-1st) on Monday met with Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, reportedly during a San Francisco stop while en route to Honduras to attend the inauguration of President-elect Porfirio Lobo Sosa.

During the nearly hour-long meeting, Congressman Wu stated that he and President Ma discussed Taiwan’s security and the importance of enhancing the U.S.-Taiwan relationship through high-level direct dialogue and cooperation on issues like clean energy and climate change.
