Congress demands Sikh hate crime tracking

WASHINGTON (April 24, 2012) — Over 90 members of the United States Congress, led by New York Congressman Joseph Crowley, have issued a letter to the Justice Department, demanding that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) track hate crimes suffered by Sikh Americans.

The letter, spearheaded by the Sikh Coalition, represents the most extensive show of support ever for Sikhs in a letter from Congress. Although Sikhs continue to experience hate crimes because of their distinct religious identity, the FBI treats all bias crimes against Sikhs as anti-Muslim hate crimes. For these reasons, the federal government has no means of tracking hate crimes against Sikhs.

Sikh American Family Receives Death Threat Letter

Washington, D.C. (March 2, 2012) — This past Tuesday, February 28, 2012, a Sikh American family from Sterling, Virginia received a letter containing death threats addressed to ‘Turban Family’.

The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund obtained a copy of the letter and is calling for a federal investigation into a hate crime. The text of the letter reads as follows:

SALDEF Calls for Hate Crime investigation at Michigan Gurdwara

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 7, 2012) — Late yesterday, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund called on local and federal authorities to initiate a hate crime investigation into the vandalism and defacing with graffiti of a gurdwara (Sikh congregational place of worship) in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

According to reports directly from the gurdwara management committee, the vandalism happened between the evening of Feb. 5th and the morning of Feb. 6, 2012. The graffiti included vulgar language, racial epithets, the use of what appears to be a cross, a large drawing of a gun, and references to the attacks of Sept. 11.

The rising costs of health care are a challenge for every Asian American ethnic group in Minnesota, but one cultural group is trying its best to take care of its own.

SEWA-AIFW is a Minneapolis-based organization that works to serve the health needs of Asian Indian Diaspora from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Gayanese, Trinidad, Tibet and the Carribeans.  Sewa means “to serve” in the Hindi language and AIFW means Asian Indian Family Wellness.  The group’s mission is to provide total family wellness.
