One year UXO treaty shows much to be done

This week on August 1st, we mark the one-year anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Those who ratified the treaty agreed to halt the use of these inhumane weapons. This treaty also includes provisions calling for support for clearance, stockpile destruction and victim assistance.

Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota helps Avoid Foreclosures and Scams

The Lao Assistance Center was formed by ethnic Lao refugees in 1983 who had escaped the war in Laos. The founders wanted to respond to the emerging needs of their newly arrived community members to help rebuild their lives. Today, Minnesota has the third largest Lao population in the country, but in Minnesota over 47 percent of the homes are upside down in their mortgages and facing foreclosure.

Lao arts UXO removal fundraiser

A fundraiser to support the removal of unexploded munitions will be held on Wednesday, June 15th at the Target Auditorium of the historic Open Book Building in downtown Minneapolis. Starting at 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., the event is to raise support for two organizations: the Mines Advisory Group and Legacies of War, with a particular focus on efforts in Southeast Asia.

This fall, three award-winning Lao American writers hope to tour across the Midwest.

On Mother’s Day, they just launched a fundraising campaign on the crowd-funding website kickstarter.com to raise $5,200 by July 7th to cover their travel and printing costs, and to bring Lao American poetry, spoken word and visual art to five states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan.
