Hmong pro-wrestling night

St. Paul, MN — Get Ready to Rummmmmbbbbbbllllllleeee. Hmong College Prep Academy will be hosting an evening of pro wrestling and family entertainment on Saturday, May 12th.  The action will take place in the school’s gym and also feature live music and break dancing exhibitions.

HCPA Social Studies teacher Morgan McLaughlin is very excited about pro wrestling coming to HCPA.  “It’s going to be a great night of entertainment,” stated Mr. McLaughlin.  “We’re partnering with the American Wrestling Federation, a St. Paul-based group that is regularly seen on KSTC Channel 45 and puts on shows throughout the Midwest.  It should be a lot of fun.”

The event is being held as a fundraiser for a new HCPA study abroad program and the school’s Junior Committee. A silent auction featuring St. Paul Saints and Minnesota Lynx merchandise, autographed books and a number of area merchant gift certificates will take place. There will also be live music from HCPA junior Jasmine Xiong and a break dance exhibition from the school’s own Supermen Hip-Hop Dancers. Proceeds from the festivities will be used towards their senior class trip.

St. Paul, MN—Hmong College Prep Academy will be hosting an evening of music and theater on May 11th.

The school’s drama class, a mix of students in grades 9-12, will be presenting a set of 5 one-act plays—Duck, Dorothy & Alice, Post-it Notes, There Shall Be No Bottom (a bad play for worse actors…) and Words, Words, Words.  HCPA’s Middle School Choir is also on the entertainment docket and will be performing Guys and Dolls, Jr.—A Musical Review.  The Middle School Choir to also Perform.

ST. PAUL (April 27, 2012) — Chief author Representative Bob Dettmer sponsored two bills to aid the Hmong and Lao veterans in obtaining burial rights guaranteed to other veterans.

House File 2260 is a Resolution to Congress, the President and the legislatures of other states to recognize the contributions of these veterans in fighting for American freedom and democracy and saving the lives of U.S. soldiers; and House File 2261 permits burial rights providing the veterans respect, dignity and honor.

On March 31, District 67 State Sen. John Harrington could not win an outright Democratic Party Endorsement to run unchallenged in his own party for a second term.

Foung Hawj is one of the candidates who will continue on to November in an attempt to be the second Hmong American to hold the seat that Mee Moua vacated.

U.S. Army Specialist Chang Lee in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Specialist Chang Lee of East St. Paul was home recently to recuperate after being wounded in Afghanistan, and while here he received the 13,000th grant from the Minnesotans’ Military Appreciation Fund.

Lee, who has returned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for treatment, was awarded a $2,000 grant from MMAF, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that provides cash grants to Minnesota service members and families of fallen servicemen and women who served in combat since 9/11

Student translates play into Hmong

White Bear Lake, Minn. (March 9, 2012) — Ka Zoua Xiong, a student in the Century College Translation and Interpreting Program, recently won high praise from the Hmong community by translating into Hmong a hilarious new play about culture conflict.

The well-attended play, “Confessions of a Lazy Hmong Woman” by May Lee-Yang, was performed at the beautiful theater in the Paul Wellstone Center on St. Paul’s West Side over two weekends in February. Over 1,400 people saw the play, which is about a Hmong-American woman who is struggling with her feminist views of the so-called “good Hmong daughter.”

CHAT Open Mic Night Returns

Celebrate the return of CHAT Open Mic Night on Friday, March 23, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at HBC Studio, 995 University Avenue, Second Floor, West Wing, Saint Paul. The location is next door to the Centre for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT) offices. Sign up to perform starting at 6 p.m. The show starts at 6:30 p.m.
