The Karen community of Minnesota will celebrate the New Year 2750 with a public event on Saturday, January 8, 2011, from noon to 3:00 p.m. at Washington Technology Magnet Middle School, 1495 Rice Street, Saint Paul, MN, 55117. The Karen New Year is celebrated around the world with traditional Karen dancing and music, sport tournaments, and traditional Karen food. It is also a chance for us to share our culture with our new neighbors and friends.

Letters help free NLD leaders in Burma

The Amnesty International head office in New York City says it received thanks from Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma (Myanmar) for our letters to her military junta captors which, she said, helped lead to her release in November. We are writing now on behalf of many other prisoners of conscience including another Nobel Peace Laureate, Liu Okaobo, imprisoned in NE China. He was unable to accept his award in Oslo and his prize sat on an empty chair for the world to see.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is freed

Washington, D.C. (November 13, 2010) – Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who turned 65 on June 19, 2010, was released from her in-home detention by the Myanmar military junta last weekend, ending an off-and-on arrest and detention for most of 20 years. The White House Office of the Press Secretary on Monday released a statement form President Barack Obama on the release of Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Laureate and still considered Burma’s pro-democracy leader by nationals and expatriates worldwide.

ST. PAUL (June 9, 2010) – Joining the military is not an easy decision, and for a refugee/immigrant, there are other issues to contend with for themselves and their families. Moe Tin Soe, 34, has lived in the United States for just two years. He began learning English in the Thailand refugee camps, and continues to improve as a student at Hennepin Technical College where he plans to finish studies in Industrial Building Engineering and Maintenance this summer.
