WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Barack Obama on April 26, 2012 named the late Gordon Hirabayashi as one of 13 recipients of this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom awards. It is the nation’s highest civilian honor presented to Hirabayashi, who passed away earlier this year on Jan. 2.

Interior Moves Forward with Efforts to Preserve and Interpret World War II Japanese American Internment Sites

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 22, 2012) — The Department of the Interior on Thursday announced that the National Park Service is awarding funding to help preserve and interpret the U.S. confinement sites where more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were detained during World War II.

The 17 grants, totaling nearly $2.9 million, are part of Interior’s ongoing efforts to capture and tell a more inclusive story of American history.

APIAs absent from Fortune 500 Boards

Washington, D.C. (March 20, 2012) — Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc. (LEAP) reveals the surprising results of its newest leadership series report on Asian and Pacific Islander inclusion on Fortune 500 boards in 2011.

According to LEAP’s report, only 116 APIs held 135 board seats in the Fortune 500 last year. APIs make up 6 percent of the total U.S. population and their purchasing power is anticipated to grow significantly by 2015. The statistics shed light on the stark reality of the meager number of API leaders in the corporate world.

Transoceanic Flows: Pacific Islander Interventions across the American Empire

LOS ANGELES — The UCLA Asian American Studies Center Press announces Amerasia Journal’s first collection devoted to essays exploring Pacific Islander Studies.

Amerasia Journal 38:1 is the first extended treatment devoted to Pacific Islander Studies with “Transoceanic Flows: Pacific Islander Interventions across the American Empire” addresses the geographical expanse and methodological diversity that characterize this field.

UCLA Professor Keith L. Camacho guest edits this special issue of Amerasia Journal based on a 2009 symposium he organized entitled “Unlearning the American Pacific.”  Transoceanic Flows surveys the broad geographies and demographies of the Pacific Islands, including the peoples and places of Guam, Hawai’i, New Zealand, Samoa, and beyond.
