ST. PAUL (April 27, 2012) — Chief author Representative Bob Dettmer sponsored two bills to aid the Hmong and Lao veterans in obtaining burial rights guaranteed to other veterans.

House File 2260 is a Resolution to Congress, the President and the legislatures of other states to recognize the contributions of these veterans in fighting for American freedom and democracy and saving the lives of U.S. soldiers; and House File 2261 permits burial rights providing the veterans respect, dignity and honor.

WASHINGTON (April 25, 2012) — President Obama formally nominated Lorna Schofield to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. If confirmed, she will be the first person of Filipino descent to serve as an Article III judge in American history.

Obama nominated Schofield on Wednesday along with other District Court nominees Terrence G. Berg, Jesus G. Bernal, Shelly Deckert Dick.

“I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench,” Obama said.  “They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court.”

Foung Hawj is one of the candidates who will continue on to November in an attempt to be the second Hmong American to hold the seat that Mee Moua vacated.

U.S. Army Specialist Chang Lee in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Specialist Chang Lee of East St. Paul was home recently to recuperate after being wounded in Afghanistan, and while here he received the 13,000th grant from the Minnesotans’ Military Appreciation Fund.

Lee, who has returned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for treatment, was awarded a $2,000 grant from MMAF, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that provides cash grants to Minnesota service members and families of fallen servicemen and women who served in combat since 9/11
