WASHINGTON (April 30, 2012) — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced that Stuart Ishimaru has been selected to head the newly established Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau established its Office of Minority and Women Inclusion in January 2012.  Mr. Ishimaru comes to the CFPB from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

HONOLULU ‹ Governor Neil Abercrombie on Thursday proclaimed award-winning slam poet Steven Kealohapau‘ole Hong-Ming Wong, better known by his pen name, “Kealoha” as Hawai‘i Poet Laureate.

Moments after being named the state’s official poet, Kealoha was asked by Governor Abercrombie to complete his first ceremonial duty under the new title by performing at the dedication of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum’s Sculpture Garden. Titled “Garden”, the spoken word performance complemented the occasion in both name and genre, as Kealoha has often chosen HiSAM as a venue.

President George W. Bush nominated Mr. Ishimaru, on the recommendation of Sen. Tom Daschle, to be one of the five members of the Commission in 2003. In 2009, President Barack Obama named Mr. Ishimaru Acting Chairman of the Commission.

WASHINGTON (April 25, 2012) — President Obama formally nominated Lorna Schofield to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. If confirmed, she will be the first person of Filipino descent to serve as an Article III judge in American history.

Obama nominated Schofield on Wednesday along with other District Court nominees Terrence G. Berg, Jesus G. Bernal, Shelly Deckert Dick.

“I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench,” Obama said.  “They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court.”

WASHINGTON (March 28, 2012) — President Barack Obama’s nominee to the World Bank presidency, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, met with Rwandan President Paul Kagame Tuesday evening in Washington to discuss the importance of the World Bank’s role in reducing poverty and supporting development for global economic growth.

“I was delighted to learn that Jim Kim has been nominated for this post, as he is a true friend of Africa and well known for his decade of work to support us in developing an efficient health system in Rwanda,” said President Kagame on Friday, March 23.  “He’s not only a physician and a leader who knows what it takes to address poverty, but also a genuinely good person. President Obama’s nomination of Dr. Kim as President of the World Bank is a welcome one, and should resonate well with the many men and women who are working to transform lives around the world.”

“Lorna Schofield is exceptionally well-qualified to serve as a federal district court judge,” said Tina Matsuoka, executive director of NAPABA. “If nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate, Ms. Schofield would be the first Filipino American in the history of the United States to serve as a federal judge. Prior to her appointment today, Cecilia Muñoz served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.  Before joining the Obama Administration in January of 2009, she worked as Senior Vice President for the Office of Research, Advocacy, and Legislation at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).

CAPAC Chairwoman Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32) said Muñoz brings a record of distinction to her new role as Director of the Domestic Policy Council.

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 20, 2011) — MayKao Y. Hang, president and CEO, Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, St. Paul, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

Hang  was named president and CEO of the Wilder Foundation, a nonprofit health and human service agency, in 2010 and was formerly its director of Children and Family Services, having spent most of her career working to improve the lives of those who are disadvantaged. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brown University and a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of Minnesota.

National CAPACD Disappointed in Senate Failure to Confirm Cordray as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Washington, D.C. – Today, in a 53-45 vote, the Senate failed to confirm Richard Cordray as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

“A fully functioning CFPB is critical to protecting consumers from predatory financial practices,” said Lisa Hasegawa, Executive Director for National CAPACD. “Not confirming Richard Cordray to lead the agency means that low-income families, students and older adults will not have the full protections that we fought for in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.”

The CFPB is tasked with making markets for consumer financial products and services work for Americans. Unfortunately, without a director, the CFPB does not have full authority to protect consumers and address abuses in the consumer financial marketplace.
