SAN FRANCISCO (August 30, 2010) –Nobel Laureate Dr. Baruch Blumberg who discovered the Hepatitis B Virus and developed the Hepatitis Vaccine will be honored by the Chinese Hospital and San Francisco’s Hepatitis B community. The honor will take place at the Hep B Free Coast to Coast dinner on September 16 at the Regency Grand Ballroom.

LOS ANGELES (August 27, 2010) – The Los Angeles Dodgers will honor photographer Jon SooHoo, who is celebrating his 25th anniversary with the team, on Friday as he throws out the ceremonial first pitch at the evening’s game against the San Francisco Giants. The evening’s festivities will include an in-game video tribute to SooHoo’s 25 years with the team, the longest-tenured photographer in Dodger franchise history. He will receive gifts from the Dodgers and the city of Los Angeles as a token of their appreciation for his hard work and dedication.

(August 21, 2010) – The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Saturday, awarded the Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards for programs individual achievements of 2009 at the 62nd Emmy Awards presentation at the NOKIA Theatre. Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development were announced at an August 14 ceremony. Prime Time Emmys were presented Sunday at the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast. Emmys in 26 other categories will be presented August 29, during the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast.

Korematsu bill passes California Senate

Sacramento, Calif. (August 9, 2010) – The Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution bill was passed on the California Senate Floor with another unanimous vote of 34-0. This follows unanimous votes in the Senate Education Committee in June (8-0), the Assembly Floor (69-0) and the Assembly Education Committee (8-0) in May. The bill now goes back to the Assembly for concurrence before moving to Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk in August or September.

Saymoukda Vongsay receives spoken word award

Minnesota based Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay became the first writer to receive the Alfred C. Carey Prize in Spoken Word Poetry, August 1, 2010, in recognition of her poem, “When Everything Was Everything.”

Brandon Lacy Campos, a writer and community activist, established the Prize in Spoken Word Poetry to honor the memory of his late grandfather, Alfred Charles Carey, described as a “hard working construction worker and family man from Northern Minnesota, who raised a family of eight, including three children not biologically his own.

STEP-UP interns complete summer on-the-job experience

Rybak and 1,350 of the youth employed through the City’s STEP-UP program celebrated the completion of their summer program Wednesday at a Minneapolis Convention Center event. The students worked as paid interns throughout the city at 178 businesses and organizations that partnered with a commitment to training the city’s future workforce.

Senate approves Congressional Gold Medal for Nisei Veterans

(August 5, 2010) ­– The U.S. Senate approved legislation (S. 1055) awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to Japanese American soldiers of the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) during the War. The legislation comes just prior to the 22nd anniversary of The Civil Liberties Act of 1988, offering redress to Japanese Americans interned by the US Government during the Second World War on August 10, 2010.
