A Tale of Two Districts

During the two months I was in Bangkok, I witnessed very different scenarios at different neighborhoods. A CNN report called it A Tale of Two Cities, but I’d call it a Tale of Different Districts. Here are some of my observations for Bangkok only.

The flood of the century in Thailand has killed over 600, ravaged the lives of millions. The government of new Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has come under heavy criticism for its handling of the crisis. The critics said she lacked experience in dealing with the flooding and said her administration mishandled the disaster.

Road Trip: From St. Paul to Seattle

I love long road trips. I did the Minnesota to Key West and Minnesota to New York City trips in my younger days. A trip I had wanted to do was the drive from the Twin Cities to Seattle. I was finally able to fulfill that dream this summer.

My friend and Asian American Press managing editor Tom LaVenture embarked on a 1,600 trip from St. Paul to Seattle. He needed to get his Ford Ranger to Seattle to put it on a ship to Kaua‘i, where he was going to use it with his new job in Hawai‘i. That is a long stretch of road and Tom said he was grateful to have me along as a seasoned road warrior and as the trip’s navigator.

Touring Cooperstown

Many Minnesota baseball fans will be traveling to Cooperstown, New York, the weekend of July 22 to 25, 2011, to attend the Induction ceremony of the great Bert Blyleven into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Now a commentator for Minnesota Twins baseball games, Blyleven was a professional baseball pitcher who played many seasons of his long career with the Minnesota Twins.
