EDINA (April 16, 2011) – Nguyen Ngoc Bao was the guest of Hennepin County Library’s “Author Talk” last Saturday at Southdale Library in Edina. The successful engineer and founder of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association, came all the way from Houston with his family to talk about his book of short essays, journal entries and editorials “Chuyen Xa Gan” (“Stories Near and Far”).

Pan Asian Arts Festival seeking talent

Led by Pan Asian Arts Alliance, local Asian American & Pacific Islander arts groups have come together to host first ever – Pan Asian Arts Festival, a month-long celebration of the May Pan Asian Heritage Month. All events are free and open to the public. The free events begin with Part I on May 1, 2011 from Noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Landmark Center, 75 West 5th Street, St. Paul, MN 55102. The Asian style festival is a family day celebration of pan Asian heritage with dance, music, storytelling, arts and crafts and carnival games.

Hmong American author and poet Burlee Vang founded the Hmong American Writers’ Circle (HAWC) in 2004 to encourage creative writing in the Hmong community and to provide a space for emerging Central Valley writers to express themselves and network with other writers. Currently, he is co-editing an anthology, entitled: How Do I Begin?A Hmong American Literary Anthology, which will be available this summer from Heyday.

Saymoukda Vongsay receives spoken word award

Minnesota based Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay became the first writer to receive the Alfred C. Carey Prize in Spoken Word Poetry, August 1, 2010, in recognition of her poem, “When Everything Was Everything.”

Brandon Lacy Campos, a writer and community activist, established the Prize in Spoken Word Poetry to honor the memory of his late grandfather, Alfred Charles Carey, described as a “hard working construction worker and family man from Northern Minnesota, who raised a family of eight, including three children not biologically his own.

National Lao American Writers Reading

Lao American writers and artists from around the nation will gather for the first Lao American Writers Summit the weekend of August 13-15, 2010 at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. There event will host panel discussions, workshops, a resources fair, and author readings. It will be an opprtunity to get a perspective on the voice of this talented and emerging community. Early registration is available at discounted rates for the summit has already begun. These rates include discounts for students, elders and teachers until June 7, 2010.
