In Black Label Movement’s Wreck, 13 survivors caught in the hold of a fast-sinking ship grapple with seemingly inevitable destruction. In this high-stakes setting where violence and cooperation, obsession and compassion, and fear and tenderness meet, Wreck asks how a community of strangers might face the Abyss.
Created by 2012 McKnight Choreography Fellow Carl Flink and set to an original, Sage Award-winning score by local composer Mary Ellen Childs, Wreck is a visceral feast for both eyes and ears. Dance Magazine raved Wreckdelivers “the combination of buoyant athleticism and feral intensity that is a hallmark of Flink’s style. . . . [I]t’s like watching a display of cascading fireworks.”
Flink’s original inspiration for Wreck came from his father Robert Flink’s stories of his time as a Great Lakes ore boat crewman in the late 1950s. The production also includes vintage 1960s 8mm ore boat footage taken by deceased Great Lakes ore boat captain Harvey C. Almstedt, generously donated to the production by his granddaughter, passionate ore boat observer and children’s book author Tracy Maurer.
This production of Wreck features a cast of 13, including: Ashley Akpaka, Lauren Baker, José Bueno, Natalie Carr, Miriam Castro, Joe Crook, Crystal Edwards, Jessica Ehlert, Patrick Jeffrey, Margaret Johnson, Alyssa Mann, Zack Teska and Cheng Xiong.
