Wing Young Huie presents The “I am You series, Chinese-ness,” which opens Saturday, June 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. with an artist talk at 8 p.m., following by ping-pong and karaoke from 9 to 11 p.m. at the The Third Place Gallery, 3730 Chicago Avenue, Studio B.
Is Chinese identity personal, national, cultural, political? Does it migrate, become malleable or transmuted? When is it authentic, sacred, exotic, kitsch?
This project employs various documentary and conceptual photographic strategies to explore the vast and complex array of Chinese identity experiences in Minnesota, throughout the United States, and in China.
Chinese-ness will preview new work from the project-in-progress. Wing recently returned from Guangzhou, China – his first trip to his family’s ancestral village and his first time photographing in China.
Wing Young Huie is a fiscal year 2013 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
