The elegance of the East is joined with the power of the West when Music in the Park Series presents The Shanghai Quartet on Sunday, March 27, at 4:00 p.m. in the acoustically superb setting of the St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ, 2129 Commonwealth Avenue (at Chelmsford).
The Shanghai Quartet members, Weigang Li and Yi-Wen Jiang, violins; Honggang Li, viola; and Nicholas Tzavaras, cello – will perform Penderecki ‘s String Quartet #3, which it debuted in 2009, as well as Chinese folk songs and Schubert’s Quartet in D Minor, “Death and the Maiden.”
The program includes ‘La Oracion del Torero’ for String Quartet (Matador’s Prayer) – Joaquin Turina; China Song – Yi-Wen Jiang; String Quartet No. 3 – Leaves from an Unwritten Diary – Krzysztof Penderecki; and String Quartet No. 14 “Death and the Maiden” – Franz Schubert.

Distinguished recording artists with more than 25 albums to their credit, The Shanghai Quartet has appeared in PBS Great Performances and holds the distinction of making a cameo appearance playing Bartok’s String Quartet #4 in Woody Allen’s film Melinda and Melinda. Nor is that the group’s only brush with popular culture. Cellist Nicholas Tzavaras was, in part, the inspiration for the Meryl Streep movie Music of the Heart.
