A down and dirty overnight puppet showdown will kickoff at noon on Saturday, July 27, in the parking lot of Tiny Town Studios, 2407 Washington St NE, Minneapolis. The events follow with “Build” on July 27-28, “The Show” at 6 p.m. on Sunday July 28, and “After party” at 7:30 p.m. on July 28.
Dumpster Duels returns for its sixth show after a five year hiatus. Presented by BareBones Productions, Dumpster Duels is a showdown between two rival theater groups who have a pile of scavenged junk and 30 hours to create a puppet show. The teams will each get a dumpster filled with materials collected beforehand and will spend all day, through the night and on into Sunday creating characters, stories, and magic from the trash.
At the kickoff, the referee will be introduced along with any requirements about characters or themes to include and then the teams will be assigned dumpsters by the flip of a coin. The public is invited to come at any point in the process to watch the transformation of trash into a wild and raucous puppet show. At 6 p.m. on Sunday the teams will present their shows. Who will prevail? Audience applause and heckling, bribery, and completely arbitrary rules will all decide the winner.
There are no tickets required for the show, but there is a suggested donation of $5-$20. Additionally, there will be t-shirts for sale. Proceeds will go towards the 20th Annual Halloween Extravaganza. Dumpster Duels will take place outdoors in a parking lot, rain or shine.
The mission of BareBones Productions is to bring art into community and community into art through movement, puppetry and spectacle performance; creative re-use, education, and collaboration. In addition to Dumpster Duels, BareBones brings the Halloween Extravaganza to Hidden Falls Park every fall, parades puppet bikes, and teaches puppetry arts to youth through the Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation.
