The journey to China is approximately 8000 miles from the U.S., and one that many have not had the chance to experience. In an effort to share the country’s 5000 years of ancient imperial heritage, Mall of America is hosting a nine-day, interactive Chinese event from Saturday, Aug. 20 through Sunday, Aug. 28 form 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in The Rotunda, Bloomingdales Court, Macy’s Court, Nordstrom Court and Sear’s Court, 60 E. Broadway, Bloomington, MN 55425.
Families and guests can enjoy continuous live shows by professional performance troupes from mainland China, Chinese crafts and music all under one roof without having to make the long trip.
Guests will witness performances including authentic Shaolin Kung-fu masters demonstrating stunts like steel-breaking with their head, and also the “Moving Forbidden City,” a production designed to show fashion and unique images that represent the historic and cultural content inside the Forbidden City. Other activities include the ancient art of Chinese paper cutting, a traditional tea ceremony, Chinese calligraphy and music performances with various types of Chinese musical instruments.
To further the cultural experience, each court space in Mall of America will be transformed with décor to represent authentic sites throughout China. The Rotunda, for example, will turn into the “Forbidden City,” a majestic imperial palace that serves as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese Emperors.
Families can begin their Chinese “travels” in the Rotunda by picking up their event passport. A stamp will be given after visiting each exhibition, and once the passport is full, guests are entered into a drawing for a trip to China valued at $10,000.
