Dear Hope, a fundraising benefit to raise awareness about depression in the community, promises to be a night of music from young local artists, spoken word artists and speakers. The event will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dreamland Arts, 677 Hamline Ave. N., St. Paul, MN 55104. Admission is $5.
Organizers hope to raise $150 for “To Write Love on Her Arms”, a nonprofit organization based in Coco, Florida, that is dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.
TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. It is a movement that is still growing and started off with a friend helping another friend in need.
“We as a community can come together and realize the signs of depression, before it worsens,” states Brenda Vang, event coordinator. “Depression is a topic that needs to be talked about more.
“Two-thirds of depression cases are left untreated,” she added. “Hope is sometimes all we need, and hope is where help begins.”
In addition to the performances, there will be a silent auction with items donated by local businesses and organizations. There will be many things to bid on such as warm vanilla fragrances, CDs, Hello Kitty items, and much more.
The entertainment will include Kaying Xiong, a young artist who has performed in CHAT’s In-Session contest. She was one of the five finalists in the competition as well as a determined singer/guitar player.
Pang Houa Thao, a senior from Johnson High School who enjoys music and says she is not afraid to admit that she enjoys food.
Spoken word artists include Khary Jackson, a Detroit native who has made the finals in national competitions for the past three years. The St Paul team that competed in the 2009 and 2010 National Poetry Slams will also perform.
The event will also be streamed live online at http://www.ustream.tv/broadcaster/6712969. Donations will be accepted at the event and also online http://givemn.razoo.com/story/Dear-Hope-Benefit-For-Twloha.
